Nir Avni is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Northwestern University. He received his PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2008 and held a Benjamin Peirce Assistant Professorship at Harvard University prior to joining Northwestern in 2012. His research focuses on algebraic and arithmetic groups, employing tools from dynamics, probability, logic, and representation theory. Avni has been awarded the 2009 Levitzky Prize in Algebra from the Israel Mathematical Union, a Sloan Fellowship in 2014, and Simons Fellowships in 2019 and 2023.
