Boubacar Kanté

Boubacar Kanté is a Professor in the Department of EECS at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on Physical Electronics (PHY) and Power and Energy (ENE). Kanté is known for his work on wave-matter interaction, including the invention of scale-invariant lasers called Berkeley Surface Emitting Lasers (BerkSELs) and the demonstration of the first topological laser based on the quantum Hall effect. He has also developed the first bound state in continuum (BIC) laser and introduced concepts in metamaterials and nanophotonics. Kanté holds the world record for plasmonic nanosensing and planar structured lenses. He is a senior member of IEEE and Optica and has received several awards, including the 2024 Bakar Prize and the 2021 Moore Inventor Fellow.
