Y. Shaya Fainman is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on applied optics and photonics, including 3-D imaging, biomedical optics, optical signal processing, and nano-photonics. Prof. Fainman is involved in the design and realization of ultrafast and miniature optical systems. His current research interests include photonic crystals, 3-D holographic optical storage, artificial dielectric properties of nanostructures, transparent photonic switching, diffractive optics, and quantum communications. He is also pioneering the development of optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) for photonic network security and privacy.
