W. E. Moerner is the Harry S. Mosher Professor and Professor, by courtesy, of Applied Physics at Stanford University's Department of CHEM. His research focuses on physical chemistry and the chemistry-biology interface, particularly in the areas of optical properties of single molecules and super-resolution imaging for cell biology. Moerner's work includes the development of 2D and 3D super-resolution imaging techniques, such as PALM/STORM, which enable the study of protein superstructures, chromatin organization, and dynamics of regulatory proteins. His research also explores the photodynamics of single trapped biomolecules with applications in photosynthesis and protein interactions. Moerner has been recognized for his contributions to super-resolved fluorescence microscopy, which earned him the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
