Steven Banik

Steven Banik is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the Department of CHEM at Stanford University. His research focuses on Organic Chemistry and the Chemistry-Biology Interface. Banik's work centers on rewiring mammalian biology and developing chemical biotechnology through molecular design and construction. His projects integrate chemical biology, organic chemistry, protein engineering, cell and molecular biology to manipulate biological machines in mammalian cells. He aims to perform new functions that illuminate regulatory machinery and the potential scope of mammalian biology. Banik's research applies concepts to develop therapeutic strategies for aging-related disorders, genetic diseases, and cancer. Prior to joining Stanford, he was a NIH and Burroughs CASI postdoctoral fellow advised by Prof. Carolyn Bertozzi. His postdoctoral research developed approaches for targeted protein degradation from the extracellular space with lysosome targeting chimeras (LYTACs). He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2016, where he worked with Prof. Eric Jacobsen on synthetic methods for the selective, catalytic difluorination of organic molecules and new approaches for generating and controlling reactive cationic intermediates in asymmetric catalysis.
