Joseph Checkelsky

Joseph Checkelsky is a Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the study of exotic electronic states of matter through the synthesis, measurement, and control of quantum materials. His work explores correlated behavior in topologically non-trivial materials, the role of geometrical phases in electronic systems, and novel types of geometric frustration. The Checkelsky lab combines experimental approaches from solid state physics, solid state chemistry, and nanoscience to probe fundamental physics and develop new technologies. He joined MIT as an assistant professor in 2014 and was promoted to associate professor in 2019 and to professor in 2025.
