Claude Canizares

Claude Canizares is the Bruno B. Rossi Distinguished Professor of Physics, Post-Tenure (1974-2024), at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of PHY. His research focuses on galactic and extra-galactic high energy astrophysics. Canizares is affiliated with the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics & Space Research and leads the Canizares Chandra/HETG Group. His work includes high-resolution spectroscopy and plasma diagnostics of cosmic X-ray sources, with a focus on active stars, black-hole or neutron star binaries, supernova remnants, quasars, and galaxy clusters. He is the principal investigator of the High Resolution Transmission Grating Spectrometer on NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.
