Regular biography
Harold Stark is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a member of the MIT Mathematics Faculty from 1969 to 1993 and is currently affiliated with the University of California at San Diego. Stark received his BS from Caltech in 1961, MS from U.C. Berkeley in 1963, and PhD in Mathematics from U.C. Berkeley in 1964 under the supervision of Derrick Henry Lehmer. He served on the faculty of the University of Michigan from 1965 to 1969. His research focuses on number theory, including the solution of the Gauss class number 1 problem and the Stark conjecture. He continues work on zeta functions in graph theory. Stark is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1983) and a Member of the National Academy of Sciences (2007).
