Regular biography
Richard Stanley is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on algebraic combinatorics. Stanley received his B.S. in mathematics from Caltech in 1966 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University in 1971. He joined the MIT faculty in applied mathematics in 1973 and became a professor in 1979. Stanley has held various leadership roles, including Chair of the Applied Mathematics Committee and Chair of the Undergraduate Committee. His contributions to mathematics have been recognized with numerous awards, including the SIAM George Pólya Prize, the AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition, and the Rolf Schock Prize in Mathematics. He was also the inaugural holder of the Department's Levinson Professorship Chair of Mathematics.
