Regular biography
James Munkres is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, affiliated with the MATH department. He served on the MIT Mathematics Faculty from 1960 to 2000 and continues as a Senior Lecturer. Munkres received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1956 under the supervision of Edwin Moise. He taught at the University of Michigan and Princeton University before joining MIT. His research focuses on differential topology, and he is known for the Munkres assignment algorithm. He has authored several influential texts, including Topology, Analysis on Manifolds, and Elementary Linear Algebra. Munkres has received the MIT School of Science Teaching Prize for Undergraduate Education in 1984 and an Honorary Doctorate from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1989.
