Regular biography
Daniel Kleitman is a Professor Emeritus of Applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, affiliated with the MATH department. His research interests focus on problems in discrete mathematics. Kleitman received the A.B. from Cornell in 1954, the A.M. and Ph.D. in physics from Harvard in 1955 and 1958. Following an NSF postdoctoral fellowship, he was appointed assistant professor of physics at Brandeis from 1960 to 1966. He joined the MIT mathematics faculty in applied mathematics as associate professor in 1966 (professor in 1969). He served on various MIT committees and held leadership roles including Department Head of the Mathematics Department from 1979 to 1984. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1973).
