Zhiwei Yun is a Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, affiliated with the Department of MATH. His research focuses on algebraic geometry, number theory, and representation theory, with particular emphasis on geometric structures that address problems in representation theory and number theory, especially within the Langlands program. Yun joined MIT as a Professor in January 2018. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Peking University in 2004 and his PhD from Princeton University in 2009, under the supervision of R. MacPherson. He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study from 2009 to 2010 and served as a CLE Moore Instructor at MIT from 2010 to 2012. Prior to joining MIT, he held faculty appointments at Stanford and Yale. His work includes developing the theory of rigid automorphic forms and contributing to the inverse Galois problem in number theory.
