Yang Lu

Professor Yang Lu is Chair Professor of Nanomechanics and Kingboard Professor in Materials Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He is also Associate Dean (Mainland Affairs) in the Faculty of Engineering. Professor Lu received his Bachelor’s degree in Physics (Microelectronics) from Nanjing University and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University, followed by postdoctoral research at MIT. Prior to joining HKU in 2022 as HKU-100 Scholar, he worked at City University of Hong Kong, where he rose to full Professor. His research focuses on experimental nanomechanics and its interdisciplinary applications in materials engineering, advanced manufacturing, and semiconductor technologies. He has published over 300 journal articles, including in Science, Nature Materials, and Nature Nanotechnology, and holds seven US patents. He is a recipient of several awards, including the University Grants Committee (UGC) Early Career Award and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau).

Yang Lu is a Chair Professor of Nanomechanics at the University of Hong Kong, specializing in Nanomechanics, Nanomanufacturing, Mechanical Metamaterials, Diamond, and Strain Engineering. His research explores the mechanical behavior of advanced materials, including the development of metamaterials with unique properties and the engineering of nanoscale structures for enhanced functionality. Lu's work includes studies on elastic deformation in nanoscale diamond, strain engineering in silicon nanowires, and the design of hierarchical nanostructured materials with exceptional strength and plasticity. His research also addresses the synthesis and application of nanomaterials in flexible electronics and energy storage systems.
