Alan C.H. Tsang

Alan C.H. Tsang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Hong Kong. He received his B.Eng. and M.Phil. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Southern California. He then worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at Stanford University and University of Arizona before joining HKU. His research interests include active matter, microfluidics, micro-swimmers, and biological adaptation. He employs theoretical tools of applied mathematics, computer modeling and simulations, machine learning, and experimental tools to investigate fundamental and application problems in fluid mechanics and biophysics.

Alan Cheng Hou Tsang is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong, specializing in Fluid Mechanics, Biophysics, Active Matter, and Nonlinear Waves. His research explores the dynamics of microswimmers, including their motion, collective behavior, and adaptive strategies for navigation. He investigates how microorganisms, such as Euglena gracilis, utilize flagellar beat switching for phototaxis and how reinforcement learning can enable self-learning locomotion at low Reynolds numbers. His work also examines nonlinear wave phenomena, solitons, and density shocks in confined systems. Tsang's research bridges fluid dynamics with biophysics, focusing on the interplay between active matter and complex fluid environments.
