James E. West is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Cornell University. His research focuses on geometric topology and infinite-dimensional topology, with an emphasis on the topology and symmetries of manifolds of finite and infinite dimensions. His work includes the study of Hilbert cube manifolds and their properties, such as simple homotopy type, and their role in the homeomorphism theory of finite-dimensional manifolds. He has contributed to the understanding of the topological classification of linear representations of finite groups and has published extensively in topological research.
