Steven Low

Steven Low is the Frank J. Gilloon Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and Electrical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology, and Director of the Schmidt Academy for Software Engineering. He holds a B.S. from Cornell University, 1987; M.S. from the University of California, 1989; and Ph.D., 1992. His research interests include power systems, cyber-physical systems, network architecture, and energy-efficient networking. He has held various academic positions at Caltech, including Associate Professor (2000–06), Professor (2006–18), and Gilloon Professor (2018–). He also serves as Director of the Schmidt Academy for Software Engineering, starting in 2026.

Steven H. Low is a Gilloon Professor of Computing+Mathematical Sciences and Electrical Engineering at Caltech. His research focuses on power systems, smart grid, control, computer networks, and performance evaluation. He has contributed significantly to the development of optimization algorithms for network congestion control, including FAST TCP and REM. His work on optimal power flow and convex relaxation has advanced the field of power systems analysis. Additionally, he has explored decentralized protocols for electric vehicle charging and demand response in power networks. Low's research also includes internet congestion control, traffic engineering, and network architectures, emphasizing mathematical theories and optimization techniques.
