Regular biography
Axel Scherer is the Bernard Neches Professor of Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics and Physics; Merkin Institute Professor at the California Institute of Technology, Department of EE. His research focuses on microfabrication for integrated microsystems, including sensors and diagnostic tools for point-of-care disease detection and precision health monitoring. His group has developed silicon nanophotonics, surface plasmon enhanced light emitting diodes, and ultra-small structures through lithography and electron microscopy. He has also worked on microfluidic integration with electronic, photonic, and magnetic sensors. Scherer has pioneered microcavity lasers and filters and has been involved in nanofabrication and vacuum tube technology research.
