Dr Gemma Bale

Dr Gemma Bale is the Gianna Angelopoulos Associate Professor in Medical Therapeutics at the University of Cambridge, Department of Electrical Engineering. Her research focuses on non-invasive optical neuromonitoring techniques, particularly in biomedical engineering, medical physics, biomedical optics, and neuroscience. She develops diffuse optical devices to monitor brain metabolism in challenging clinical environments, such as the intensive care unit. Her work includes broadband near-infrared spectroscopy (bNIRS) to measure cytochrome-c-oxidase activity, which reflects mitochondrial metabolism. Dr Bale has pioneered this technique in neonatal intensive care and developed portable devices for various medical applications. Her research aims to translate biomedical optics into clinical practice.
