Regular biography
Frieder Seible is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, where he served as Chair of the Department of Structural Engineering from 1995 to 2001. His research focuses on the design and retrofit of buildings and bridges for earthquake safety, new technologies for aging infrastructure, and blast-resistant design of critical structures. Seible was the founding director of the Charles Lee Powell Structural Research Laboratories and has contributed to the Caltrans Bridge Seismic Safety Program. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Seible joined UC San Diego in 1983 and was appointed Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering in 2003, retiring in 2013.
