Gilbert A. Hegemier is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on earthquake engineering, particularly on retrofitting bridges, roadways, and buildings to enhance public safety and structural performance. Hegemier's work includes developing and testing full-scale models of bridge column retrofit systems, which have been applied by the California Department of Transportation. He is also involved in developing lightweight fiber-reinforced composites for earthquake damage prevention and blast mitigation techniques for critical structures. Hegemier has contributed to numerous publications and has held various leadership roles, including chair of the Department of Structural Engineering since 2007.
