Regular biography
Jiun-Shyan Chen is the William Prager Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, and also holds a professorship in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research focuses on computational mechanics, multiscale materials modeling, and data-driven computing, with an emphasis on meshfree methods and their applications in dynamic and nonlinear mechanics. He is also affiliated with the Center for Extreme Events Research. Prior to joining UCSD in 2013, he was the Chancellor's Professor at UCLA, where he served as Chair of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department from 2007 to 2012. His academic career includes a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.
