Regular biography
Yu Qiao is a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. His research interests include thermodynamics, advanced energy-related materials, high-performance infrastructure materials, in-situ resource utilization, smart materials and structures, and failure analysis for engineering materials and structures. Yu Qiao received a bachelor's degree in applied mechanics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1994, a master's degree in materials science from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from MIT in 2002. From 2002 to 2006, he served as an assistant professor at the University of Akron before joining UCSD in 2006. He is affiliated with the Charles Lee Powell Structural Research Laboratories.
