Steven R. Tannenbaum is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the formation, distribution, and metabolism of nitrate, nitrite, and N-nitroso compounds. His work has explored the endogenous synthesis of nitrogen oxides and the discovery of nitric oxide as a biological molecule. Current research includes the pathophysiological consequences of nitric oxide and its oxidation products, with an emphasis on chemical damage to DNA and its genotoxic effects. The Tannenbaum lab also investigates tissue engineering for drug development and chemical toxicity, including the development of an in vitro organized tissue-based sensor for toxin detection and drug metabolism screening. Additionally, the lab is advancing methods to measure drug and chemical fate using mass spectrometry and other analytical techniques.
