Jeffrey I. Steinfeld is an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the Department of Chemistry. His research interests evolved from obtaining kinetic data for physical and chemical systems using time-resolved spectroscopy to studying large, interconnected systems, including the Earth System. Steinfeld joined MIT in 1966 after earning his S.B. from MIT in 1962 and his PhD from Harvard in 1965. He remained at MIT until his retirement in 2007. His teaching contributions include a co-authored textbook, Chemical Kinetics and Dynamics, which is currently out of print. He is also involved with MIT Alumni for Climate Action (MACA).
