John Dowling is a Lecturer in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biology at Harvard University. His research focuses on the structure, function, pharmacology, genetics, and synaptic interactions of retinal cells, with an emphasis on the vertebrate retina as a model for understanding neural mechanisms. Currently, he collaborates with Professor Jeff Lichtman and colleagues to reconstruct the human fovea using connectomic methods. His work addresses the implications of foveal damage in conditions like Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Dowling has authored several books on neuroscience and vision, including 'The Retina: An Approachable Part of the Brain' and 'Neurons and Networks: An Introduction to Neuroscience.'
