Kathryn Haas is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Chemistry at Duke University's Department of Chemistry. Her research focuses on the interactions between metal ions and polypeptides, particularly the proteins that harness copper redox chemistry in human extracellular fluids and at membrane interfaces. Haas investigates how biological molecules manage metal ion interactions, with an emphasis on copper binding and its implications for cellular processes. Her work includes studies on the human CTR1 protein and its role in copper transport, as well as the potential involvement of amyloid beta peptides in copper trafficking. Haas is also engaged in educational initiatives, including projects on science communication and ethics education for STEM students.
