Regular biography
Tien Chi Chen is Emeritus Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and an Honorary Fellow of the university. He obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from Duke University in 1957 and joined IBM in the United States, where he served for over two decades. In 1979, he became a Visiting Professor at the university’s Department of Electronics and later held positions as Professor of Computer Science and Electronics and Chairman of the Department of Computer Science. From 1980 to 1988, he served as Head of United College. Since his retirement in 1992, he has continued to contribute to the university as a Visiting Professor, teaching courses and advising on curriculum development. He is a Fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and has received several accolades, including the Centennial Medal of IEEE, two IBM Outstanding Contribution Awards, and five IBM Invention Achievements Awards.
