Professor James A. Bain is an Associate Department Head for Academic Affairs in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at Carnegie Mellon University. He is also the Associate Director of the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His research focuses on information storage systems, including magnetic, optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical devices and materials. Bain has co-authored over 225 papers and is involved in active research programs in heat assisted magnetic recording and resistive switches for memory and reconfigurable electronics. He is a member of several professional societies, including the IEEE Magnetics, IEEE Electron Devices, and IEEE Photonics Societies.
