Wendy Flavell

Wendy Flavell is Professor Emerita in the Photon Physics Group within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Manchester. She specialises in surface physics and is a member of the Photon Science Institute. She was Vice Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science and Engineering between 2018 and 2021 and Deputy Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy until her retirement in 2022. Her research focuses on the electronic structure of complex metal oxides and chalcogenides, particularly in the context of next-generation solar cells, using techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation. She has supervised 43 PhD students and has contributed to various national and international research initiatives.

Wendy R Flavell is a Professor of Surface Physics whose research focuses on photoemission and photovoltaics. Her work explores the electronic structure of materials such as TiO2 and perovskites using techniques like resonant photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. She investigates surface degradation, carrier multiplication, and the synthesis of inorganic and double perovskite thin films for photovoltaic applications. Her studies also examine surface properties of PbS nanoparticles, SnO2, and ZnO, with an emphasis on their electronic and chemical behavior under various conditions. Flavell's research contributes to the development of efficient and stable photovoltaic materials through surface and solid-state chemistry.
