Michael Birse is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at The University of Manchester, Department of Physics. His research focuses on the intersection of particle and nuclear physics, particularly the role of symmetries in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and their implications for nucleon and meson interactions. He employs theoretical techniques such as effective field theory and the renormalisation group to explore these phenomena. Birse has supervised multiple PhD and MSc students and has contributed to various research projects, including studies on few-nucleon systems and nuclear matter properties. His work also involves collaborations on topics like chiral symmetry, nucleon-nucleon interactions, and the behavior of nuclear matter under extreme conditions.
