Nikolai Makarov is the Richard Merkin Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology, affiliated with the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy. His research focuses on complex analysis and related fields, including potential theory, harmonic analysis, and spectral theory, as well as applications to complex dynamics, mathematical conformal field theory, Coulomb gas models, and random matrices. His recent work explores topics such as the topology of quadrature domains, Hele-Shaw flows, and universality laws in random matrix ensembles.
