Nurul Alam

Dr Nurul Alam is a Lecturer in the Discipline of Accounting, Governance and Regulation at The University of Sydney Business School. His research focuses on accounting theory and standards, international accounting, accounting, auditing and accountability, auditing and accountability, financial accounting, banking, finance and investment. Dr Alam completed his PhD at The University of Sydney Business School, where he investigated the relative power of machine learning and traditional semi-parametric survival models using accounting, market, market microstructure, and derivative instrument data to predict U.S. corporate bankruptcies. His work also contributed a novel deep learning framework for panel data applications. His research has been published in leading journals, including International Review of Financial Analysis, Accounting & Finance, Abacus, and Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions & Money. Dr Alam is an award-winning educator whose teaching excellence has been recognised through more than twenty awards, including the Dean’s Citation for Teaching (Merit), Dean’s Citation for Tutoring, Dean’s Award for Tutoring, and multiple nominations for the Wayne Lonergan Award for Teaching Excellence across the Accounting and Business Analytics disciplines. He has also received multiple nominations for Excellence in Research at the Business School. Dr Alam is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), reflecting his commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. Dr Alam holds a Master of Commerce with a double major in Finance and Accounting from The University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialisation in Finance and Banking from University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Prior to his current appointment, he held various academic roles at the Business School, including Tutor, Casual Lecturer, Course Coordinator, Teaching Fellow, Nominated Academic, and Research Assistant on several high-profile ARC projects.
