Van P. Carey is the A. Richard Newton Chair in Engineering and Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He is affiliated with the Mechanical Engineering department and holds the title of Chair. His research focuses on near-interface micro- and nanoscale thermophysics and transport in liquid-vapor systems, computational modeling and simulation of energy conversion and transport processes, and the use of machine learning strategies to enhance energy conversion and transport in applications. His work spans various applications, including high performance solar thermal power systems, building and vehicle air conditioning, and energy efficiency of digital information systems. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and has received several awards, including the James Harry Potter Gold Medal and the Heat Transfer Memorial Award.
