Penny Chisholm is an Institute Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on the biology, ecology, and evolution of the single most abundant marine phytoplankton species, aiming to understand the forces that shape microbial ecosystems. Chisholm's work spans microbial ecology, ecological genomics, and the study of marine cyanobacteria and viruses.
