Regular biography

Shi-Chune Yao is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests include multiphase flow and heat transfer, with a focus on energy and thermal control industries. He conducts experimental and theoretical research on topics relevant to industry and fundamental science. Yao's work involves micro-scale energy systems using MEMS technology, including micro-scale refrigeration systems on silicon chips and two-phase fluidics in direct methanol fuel cells. He is also involved in the thermal modeling of additive manufacturing of metal products. His research includes spray cooling technology, which he pioneered in 1989, and micro-channel systems for cooling electronic chips. Recently, he has worked on numerical simulations of 3D printing of metal products.
