Regular biography
Jonathan Cagan is the David and Susan Coulter Head and George Tallman and Florence Barrett Ladd University Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on engineering design automation and methods, integrating AI, machine learning, and optimization with cognitive science to enhance human designers' effectiveness. He explores computational modeling of designer processes, biomechanical system design, and user-centered design. Cagan co-founded the Integrated Innovation Institute and has held leadership roles in the College of Engineering. He is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of ASME and AAAS. Cagan has received multiple awards, including the ASME Computers and Information in Engineering Division Lifetime Achievement Award. He serves as co-Editor-in-Chief of the Design Science Journal and has been on the CMU faculty since 1990.
