Julian Allwood

Julian Allwood is Professor of Engineering and the Environment at the University of Cambridge, Department of Engineering. His research interests include structures, reducing global carbon emissions, sustainability, and structural theory. He has worked for 10 years at Alcoa before transitioning to academia, initially at Imperial College, and from 2000 in Cambridge. His research group focuses on whole systems analysis, material demand reduction, and novel material processes. He has authored the book 'Sustainable Materials: with both eyes open' and a revised edition 'Sustainable Materials: without the hot air'. His work has been recognized by Bill Gates as one of his top six reads of 2015. He is also a Lead Author of the 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with a focus on mitigating industrial emissions.
