Regular biography
Mark Goulian is the Charles and William L. Day Distinguished Professor in the Natural Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Biology. His research focuses on the mechanisms bacteria use to adapt to environmental changes, particularly in Escherichia coli and related species. His work explores how these organisms sense and respond to intra- and extracellular cues, including adaptation to oxygen and nutrient availability, bacterial phosphohistidine phosphatases, and commensal colonization of animal hosts. Dr. Goulian holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (1990) and is affiliated with the Lynch Laboratory, 204F.
