Ian Bourg

Ian Bourg is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the High Meadows Environmental Institute at Princeton University. His research focuses on Water, Climate and Energy, Hydrology and the Atmospheric Environment, Chemistry, Biology and Technology. Dr. Bourg's work examines the fundamental properties of water at interfaces and their impact on environmental systems, with current projects exploring the role of clay minerals in sedimentary media, mineral-organic interactions in contaminant fate and transport, and the hydrophilicity of natural systems. He is affiliated with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and holds concurrent appointments with the High Meadows Environmental Institute and the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials (PRISM).

Ian Bourg is a geochemist and environmental chemist at Princeton University, specializing in the study of clay minerals, mineral-water interfaces, and soft earth geophysics. His research explores the molecular and continuum-scale interactions between water, ions, and clay minerals, with a focus on their implications for environmental and geologic processes. Bourg's work includes molecular dynamics simulations of water structure, diffusion, and ion adsorption in clay nanopores, as well as the geochemistry of CO2 sequestration and its interfacial behavior under geologic storage conditions. His research bridges molecular-scale phenomena with macroscopic geophysical applications, particularly in understanding the behavior of fine-grained sedimentary rocks.
