Shelby L. Hatch

Shelby L. Hatch is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University and serves as a Weinberg College Advisor. She holds a B.A. from The College of Wooster and a Ph.D. from The University of Rochester. Her research focuses on environmental justice and Youth Participatory Science, emphasizing student involvement in the research process. Hatch teaches a range of undergraduate chemistry courses, including introductory labs, first-year seminars, and a capstone laboratory course for chemistry majors. She also develops and teaches chemistry courses within the Northwestern Prison Education Program (NPEP), where she created an open educational resource textbook. Her work examines heavy metal contamination distribution in Chicago, particularly in low socio-economic status and communities of color.
