Robert T. Sauer is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focused on intracellular proteolytic machines involved in protein-quality control and homeostasis. Before closing his lab, he studied the relationship between protein structure, function, sequence, and folding, with an emphasis on molecular machines that degrade or remodel proteins. His work utilized biochemistry, single-molecule biophysics, structural biology, protein design, and molecular genetics. Sauer has contributed to significant publications on proteolytic mechanisms, including the ClpXP protease and the HslUV protease.
