About
Regular biography

Jonathan Christopher Mattingly is the Kimberly J. Jenkins Distinguished University Professor of New Technologies in the Department of Mathematics at Duke University. He is also a professor of statistical science. His research focuses on the long-term behavior of stochastic systems, including randomly forced fluid dynamics, turbulence, stochastic algorithms, and stochasticity in biochemical networks. Since 2013, he has worked on quantifying gerrymandering and its interaction with a region's geopolitical landscape, leading to testimony in court cases, including in North Carolina. He is a fellow of the IMS, AMS, SIAM, and AAAS, and has received a Sloan Fellowship and a PECASE CAREER award.

Scholar-generated biography

Jonathan C. Mattingly is a Professor of Mathematics and Statistical Science at Duke University, specializing in probability, dynamical systems, biology, random numerics, and gerrymandering. His research explores stochastic differential equations, ergodicity, and numerical methods for partial differential equations. He investigates the long-term behavior of stochastic systems, including the Navier-Stokes equations and Markov chains, with applications to fluid dynamics and statistical mechanics. His work also addresses the mathematical foundations of computational methods in biology and political science, such as quantifying gerrymandering. Mattingly's contributions focus on understanding convergence, stability, and approximation in stochastic processes, with an emphasis on rigorous analysis and practical applications.
