Jay Howell
Regular biography
Jay Howell is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on numerical analysis and computational mathematics, particularly the numerical approximation of partial differential equations. Prof. Howell's work centers on the theoretical foundations of the finite element method, including compatibility conditions for mixed methods, and the development of finite element methods that directly approximate physical quantities such as fluid stresses. He is also interested in efficient linear solvers and decoupling approaches for time-dependent problems. Prof. Howell collaborates with scientists in various fields and mentors undergraduate students in research projects involving mathematical modeling and computational methods.
