Gloria Silva

Gloria Silva is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University. She holds a Ph.D. from Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and has a background in pharmacy and chemistry. Her research areas include bioorganic chemistry, fluorescent dyes synthesis, peptides and peptide nucleic acids synthesis, molecular recognition of DNA and G quadruplexes, natural product chemistry, and bioactive natural products. Silva teaches courses such as Organic Chemistry I and II, Advanced Organic Chemistry, and The Culture of Color: Dyes, Chemistry and Sustainability. She also engages in outreach activities, including teaching science classes for K-3 students and lectures on the chemistry of food. She has authored and co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and holds one patent.

Gloria L. Silva is a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University with a focus on the synthesis and application of fluorogenic cyanine dyes in biological systems. Her work explores the design of DNA-templated J-aggregates and their use in fluorescent nanotags for intracellular imaging. Silva's research also investigates the biological activity of natural products, including alkaloids and flavonoids, with applications in cancer therapy and drug resistance reversal. Her studies combine experimental and computational approaches to understand the photophysical properties of cyanine dyes and their interactions with proteins and DNA. She has contributed to the development of fluoromodules and their use in bioimaging and drug delivery systems.
