Regular biography
Gizelle Sherwood is a Teaching Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies and Laboratories in the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University. Her teaching focuses on the foundational courses for freshman and sophomore students, emphasizing active learning through traditional and technology-based methods. She integrates real-world applications and hands-on experiences into both lecture and laboratory courses to promote visual and kinesthetic learning. Sherwood is also involved in outreach programs with the Gelfand Center, Pittsburgh Junior Academy of Science, and the Boy Scouts of America. She has received several teaching awards, including the Julius Ashkin Teaching Award in 2020 and the PITF Fellowship in 2021.
