Professor Michael Cates is a member of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on Soft Matter, including the flow of colloids, polymers, emulsions, gels, and other soft materials. He heads the Soft Matter research group and has conducted studies on shear-thickening, rheology in dense suspensions, and dynamics of soft glasses. Cates has also explored flow of liquid crystals, active matter, and phase ordering in active and passive systems. He recently completed an ERC Advanced Grant titled ADNeSP: Active and Driven Systems, Nonequilibrium Statistical Physics.
