Franklin Aigbirhio

Professor Franklin Aigbirhio is affiliated with the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on molecular imaging, particularly in the field of positron emission tomography (PET), where he develops and characterises novel imaging probes for detecting biological markers and biochemical changes associated with disease mechanisms. His work includes imaging neuroinflammation and misfolded proteins linked to neurodegenerative disorders. His research is conducted at the Molecular Imaging Chemistry Laboratory and the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, with collaborations across the department and with biomedical research groups at the School of Clinical Medicine.

Franklin I Aigbirhio is a Professor of Molecular Imaging Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, specializing in Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Radiochemistry, Neuroimaging, and Molecular Imaging. His research focuses on understanding brain function and disease through advanced imaging techniques, with applications in neurodegenerative disorders, traumatic brain injury, and psychiatric conditions. His work includes studies on dopamine release, cerebral ischemia, and the role of microglia in Alzheimer’s disease. He has contributed to the development of radiotracers for PET imaging, such as 11 C-Metomidate and 18 F-AV-1451, to improve diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic monitoring.
