Mark Kambites

Mark Kambites is a Professor of Pure Mathematics at The University of Manchester, affiliated with the Mathematics department. His research interests span semigroup theory, tropical algebra and geometry, combinatorial and geometric group theory, formal languages and automata, computational complexity, parallel processing, cryptography, and their intersections. He obtained his first degree and PhD from the University of York and has held research fellowships in Canada and Germany. He joined Manchester as an RCUK Academic Fellow in 2006 and was promoted to Professor in 2016. He has served as Head of Pure Mathematics and Director of Research in Mathematics and was selected as an inaugural Fellow of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences in 2026. He is currently Chair of EPSRC's Strategic Advisory Team (SAT) in Mathematical Sciences.
