Matthew Halsall is a Professor of Photonics in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester. His research interests include the optical spectroscopy of electronic materials, silicon optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices, and the development of spectroscopic techniques and instrumentation. He was appointed Lecturer in the School of Physics in Manchester in 1994 and moved to the School of EEE in 2004. In 2006, he received a Global Research Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering to fund a sabbatical at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was promoted to a Chair in photonics in 2011. His work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 7, 9, and 11.
