Thomas McDonald

Regular biography

Thomas McDonald is a Reader in Sustainable Materials at The University of Manchester, affiliated with the Department of Materials and the Department of Chemistry. His research spans polymer and colloid science, with active interests in designing nanomaterials for drug delivery, detecting environmental nanoplastics, and advancing sustainable plastics. He joined the University of Manchester in 2023, following roles at Unilever, the University of Liverpool, and collaborations with Prof. Andy Cooper. McDonald is Head of Environmental Sustainability and Engagement for the School of Natural Sciences and leads the Chemical Materials Design research area within the Henry Royce Institute. His work contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, including health, clean water, and sustainable consumption.
